Janus High Yield Fund Review

This Janus High Yield Fund Review will concentrate on the T shares fund JAHYX. There are others but their makeup and performance of this bond fund are similar. The only different is the classification of the shares. The other classes are the C class JDHCX, the S class JDHYX, the A class JHYAX and the I class JHYFX.

This high yield fund is mostly invested in bonds. Gibson Smith has been the fund manager since 2001. His strategy is the bottom up look at investing in corporate bonds that concentrate on their cash flow generation, quality of their management team and the security valuation of the company.

The assets of this fund are in 231 bonds and 9 stocks with an annual turnover rate of 97%. 89.24% of the bonds are from the domestic market while 8.99% are of foreign origin. The leading sector of investment is Industrials with 87.37% of the fund’s assets with 6.05% in the financial sector.

The volatility measures of this fund are a Beta at 0.74, the R squared is at 0.96 and the standard deviation is 12.85. The annual expense ratio is at 0.94%.

The performance of this fund as of April 30, 2010 was a one year return of 32.98%, the five year return was 7.41% and since its inception in December of 1995 the return was 7.90%. The YTD return so far, as reported on May 10, 2010 is 3.94%.

This is one of the Janus Mutual Funds that is rated with 4 stars from Morningstar that is a below average risk with above average returns. It takes a minimum of $2500 to invest in the Janus High Yield Fund. Review of this fund is positive if the investor is looking for a conservative investment.
